The State of Remote Work

A new study from Coworking Mag presents an interesting snapshot of the state of remote working in the US.  We all know that remote work boomed in the US during the COVID-19 pandemic.  Remote worker numbers have declined since then, but they remain surprisingly high, with nearly 22. 5 million remote workers in the US in 2023.  This represents around 13.8% of the US workforce.

Remote workers can be found everywhere, but they are concentrated in major metro areas. Austin, Raleigh and Denver rank as the top three in terms of remote worker concentration.  In Austin, nearly 25% of the workers operate remotely.  The biggest increases in remote work have occurred in Omaha, Akron, and Harrisburg.  Overall, remote work in the US has boomed since 2014, when remote workers comprised only 4.5% of the US workforce.
