The City of Seattle is taking the lead in providing a stronger safety net for gig economy workers. Earlier this week, Seattle’s Mayor Bruce Harrell signed a new law providing paid sick and safe leave to app-based gig economy workers. The new rules are especially targeted for those working with popular apps such as Uber, Doordash, and Grubhub. The new law targets all firms who employ more than 250 app-based workers worldwide, so it will have broad applications in Seattle. Under the new rules, app-based workers will accrue one day of paid leave for every thirty days worked on the app. The law builds on a successful pilot tested during the pandemic, and is an important step in providing a much-needed safety net for these workers. You can see the full details of this bill (Council Bill 120514) here.
