The ongoing budget battles in Washington are sadly expected to generate real economic hardship for many communities across the U.S. This is particularly true for regions that have traditionally relied on defense contracting as a major source of jobs and local economic activity. As defense budgets decline, these regions face difficult adjustment challenges. A new series of guides from the Pentagon’s Office of Economic Adjustment seek to help. The guides, developed with support from EntreWorks Consulting and other key partenrs, are desigined for local officials. They cover key topics, such as understanding the defense economy, organizing a community response, and dealing with key business and workforce transitions. They should provide valuable advice for communities seeking to develop new economic engines to replace lost defense-related jobs.
